I wasn’t going to watch it.
I love Frank Herbert. Not so much for the science fiction of his writing, but because he writes beautifully complex stories about palace intrigue and convoluted relationships. All of it wrapped up in an ecology and science fiction package.
I can imagine him writing individual books about the courts of France and England in the 1700s. Or the Ottoman Empire. Or ancient China. Or one of the major religions. But he doesn’t have to because he wrote Dune. His first book encompasses all of these topics plus wonderful character development and dialog.
That’s why I really didn’t want to watch Dune the movie. It’s impossible to bring to life Herbert’s book in a meaningful way.
Denis Villeneuve’s movie is beautiful, but what makes Herbert’s book so amazing is missing. I don’t blame Villeneuve; he set himself up with an impossible task and did the best he could.
If you’ve watched it, what did you think?
