East Coast vs. West Coast — who cares?
The majority of articles about Will Smith, including on Medium, are about why we should emulate him to become successful.
Then came The Slap.
Hollywood rallied to Smith’s defense. New York City rallied to Chris Rock’s defense.
Who Cares?
Let’s face it, the vast majority of people don’t care about what anyone in Hollywood or New York City thinks.
Two adults have an altercation on a Hollywood TV show watched by few people. No one cares.
A New York City TV show watched by a few people makes fun of The Slap. No one cares.
The Connection
Hollywood, New York City, TV. No one cares.
All three of these things are from a past era. An era that was important to our grandparents.
For people born in the internet era, “how Will Smith became successful” is just one of the millions of how to be successful screeds available.
What’s Important
The vast majority of us do care about the wars in Ukraine, Iraq, and Afghanistan to name just a few. We care about how we’re going to survive next month because of inflation and COVID. We care about not being able to afford healthcare from a medical industry that’s all about prescribing drugs instead of doing the hard work of helping us to be healthy.
Solution
Our grandparent’s era tried and failed. Hollywood failed them. New York City failed them. TV failed them.
Our generation has access to much more information. We do have to work to find legitimate sources of information, but we have plenty of real-world and internet friends to help us.
Accurate, vetted information is powerful.
Question
What will we do with all of our information resources to make our world better?
Writing and video have a place. We need to help cut through the corporate noise to bring attention to the things that do matter.
More importantly, we need to be effective at finding solutions and applying them today.
Success
The teams of people who make the world a noticeably better place should be celebrated as successful by the very same internet content creators who brought light to the important issues.
This loop of identifying important issues, teams of people who make our planet a better place for all of us, and the celebration of those teams is what we’ll be able to proudly proclaim as a system to be emulated for ongoing success.
